Head of Technology Engagement

Our Organisation:

The Football Association (The FA) is the governing body of football in England. We are responsible for promoting and developing the game at all levels; from grass roots through to the professional game, The FA Cup and the England International teams, and has two core assets: Wembley Stadium and St George’s Park.

Overview of the role:

This key role will engage with technology users and stakeholders to ensure that The FA has the right plan to deliver the strategic business objectives and to maximise the return on investment in Technology.

Key responsibilities include:


  • Engage pro-actively with the business leadership teams. Develop effective working relationships in order to be a trusted, strategic partner to the business on how Technology can be leveraged for delivery innovation and competitive advantage.
  • Develop in depth understanding of corporate strategies, goals and plans and collaborate on translating corporate strategies and needs into clear outcomes for Technology solutions and services. 
  • Pro-actively demonstrate required behaviours in line with expectations of the role.
  • Provide effective, constructive challenge to ensure that the Technology strategy is implemented effectively across the different business areas.
  • Understand the relevant Technology landscape and drive activities to support the strategic application of Technology.


  • Manage a small team that will provide technology business partnering for the FA.
  • Create an environment that reinforces the Company values and culture, ensuring the acquisition, retention and development of talent.
  • Provide the voice of Technology Services across the business and customers.
  • Collaborate effectively with senior Technology Services’ team.  Pro-actively promote the Technology operating model and communicate the entry points and ways of working to enable the business area to work effectively with Technology Services.
  • Contribute to the development and tracking of the annual IT budget through the strategic planning processes, ensuring maximum return on investment.


  • Lead Technology Services’ contribution to influencing and managing demand, gathering requirements, assessing options, designing and advocating solutions.
  • Support planning and capacity management within Technology Services by keeping the various departments sighted on business strategy, plans and thinking. Identify areas of capability shortfall and support Technology Services in addressing.
  • Oversee programme / project initiation; help develop plans, ideas and support the development of business cases for new investments.
  • Maintain oversight of project / solution delivery and ensure successful delivery of business benefits.

What we are looking for:

  • Relevant Degree or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in engagement roles working with demanding stakeholders to build and deliver strategic plans
  • Driving of change in operating models to transform the delivery of Technology services and the value provided
  • Experience on and/or working with a senior leadership team
  • Synthesising multiple and complex requirements into a simple, measurable and engaging plan.
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering results through effective empowerment of others.
  • Good understanding and experience of project/programme management methodologies
  • Good managerial accounting skills to ensure that budgets are managed
