Head of Performance Medicine

OUR GOAL

Win the World Cups in 2022 and 2023 and sustain success thereafter

To deliver against this inspiring goal we are changing how we work, reallocating resources and investing heavily to create a team of exceptional people capable of creating winning England teams at our world-class training facilities at St George’s Park in Staffordshire.

This is a unique and exciting time to join The FA and The Head of Performance Medicine will be integral to the organisation achieving its goals.

THE ROLE

This is a strategic leadership role, with no hands on clinical delivery. You will lead the strategic and operational development of a world leading performance medicine service to all England teams which supports the coaching process and encompasses best practice in all aspects of preparation & player management for international football.

The scope is broad and exciting and you will also be responsible for the strategic leadership of all The FA medical policies and issues across the different levels of the game, in addition to leading the ongoing development of guidelines and related educational content for all aspects of performance medicine.

An essential part of the role is the development and maintenance of close, mutually beneficial working relationships with key organisations (FIFA, UEFA), leagues (Premier league, football league) and stakeholder groups to ensure the alignment of research and best practice development across the game.

You will lead and inspire the department and create a high performance culture promoting an open exchange of views, high levels of challenge and the celebration of success. The team’s personal development will be a passion for you and you’ll ensure their delivery is always on track.

THE PERSON

You will possess outstanding strategic leadership skills, coupled with a strong track record of leading high performing multi-disciplinary sports medical teams within an elite sporting environment that has delivered great results and performance advantages.

You will need to have a post graduate qualification in Sport Medicine (or equivalent) and be eligible to practice in the UK, coupled with outstanding knowledge of and proficiency in sports medicine but also comfortable in a strategic leadership role with no front line delivery.

As a leader, you will bring energy and positivity to the role, thrive under pressure and always embrace new challenges. You will need to demonstrate that you are a natural collaborator and an outstanding relationship builder with strong interpersonal skills to positively influence a broad range of stakeholders in a style that promotes openness and gains trust.

You will already have an extensive network of organisations and individuals which influence and advise you and it’s highly likely you will have managed research programmes to support your work.

A meticulous planner, you will be comfortable translating your vision into goals and deliverables which you take great pride in delivering on time and in scope.

Communication will be a stand out strength in all forms, allowing you to get your message across clearly at all times to a variety of audiences. You may have worked in football, you may not, but you will be highly credible with key stakeholders and possess the experience and intellectual agility to gain a deep understanding of the game and its future needs.
